Hidden in plain sight either side of Lanark’s High Street are twelve historic closes, their footprint and fragments of architecture dating back to Medieval times.
This body of work was part of a collaborative exhibition with the artist Kirsten Harris, held at the Tolbooth, Lanark. The exhibition was called ‘Close Encounters’ and held Spring 2021 and aimed to bring attention to the rich history woven into the fabric of Lanark’s townscape.
The names of the Closes are as follows:
Wide Close, Cross Keys Close, Duncan’s Close, Hunter’s Close, Veitch’s Close, Shirley’s Close (SOLD), Brewery Close, Bull’s Close, McKenzie’s Close, Thomson’s Close, Bernard’s Wynd and Ritchie’s Close (SOLD).

Please note that the titles of each of the Closes do not appear on the artwork.
Each artwork is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity with a short reference to some of the history of that particular Close.
