An exhibition of some unexpected views of Douglas, an historic Scottish village set on the Douglas Estate, South Lanarkshire held in The Scrib Tree, Douglas, Spring 2021.
‘Around the Corner’ expresses the feeling of anticipation of something brighter about to happen. This body of work features 16 views of Douglas and incubated against a backdrop of Covid, Brexit, the US presidential elections and climate crisis.
Monochromatic colours mixed from Spectral Black* show dark skies and heavy townscape. Streets are dream-like and deserted but lifted by pools of light. Signs of life appear in the flowers. Fallen petals acknowledge our losses.
This exhibition is a change in my usual style. As you can see here on my website, my work has previously captured long street elevations full of life, colour and detail. I have always worked to show the streets as they are at the time of drawing, building an archive of our townscapes. With these paintings of Douglas, I chose to acknowledge the times we were living in with a series of smaller paintings to express these bleak times turning at last towards spring.
*Spectral Black is made with three primaries: Ultramarine, Crimson Alizarin and Citrus Yellow.
